Does anybody know where to get cheap train tickets?

Hi there :) I was wondering if anyone could help me. Its my friends birthday in august and i want to take her to London for the day as a surprise and I was wondering who is the cheapest to travel with. It would be around the 18th of august and there will be two of us and we are students. Does anybody know where to get good cheap tickets without changing trains? :) Thanks!!
